You may think you are ready for an interview because you practiced your answers to even the toughest questions. You can tell them why you left or lost your last job, what you are looking for in your next job, even what your weakness are, if they ask. Is that all there is? Yes, if that’s all you’ve done.
What you don’t say can be more telling than what you do say. Here’s a countdown of things that work against you in an interview. If you see yourself doing any of these, you need to address it before you go to another interview.
7. Showing any kind of negativity toward a previous boss or employer. No matter what happened, you cannot throw them under the bus. It’s not just the words you use either. It’s your tone of voice and your facial expressions that will give you away. Practive your answer out loud in a mock interview with a friend so you can get feedback on how it sounds. Focusing too much on what you want either in an interview or your cover letter leads employers to think you aren’t concerned with the answer to their main question, “What can you do for me?Indicate what contributions you would make to their company and what a great fit you’d be as a fellow employee.
3. Trying to please everyone. Even though you are nice, professional and articulate, there still may be something missing for one of the interviewers. You shouldn’t stretch your qualifications beyond what you can back up later. If you are confident about your abilities and you are pleased with the interview, ask if anyone has any concerns about your candidacy that you could address while you are there. It’s a bold move and one that could put to rest a lingering doubt an interviewer may have.
2. No star quality. You hear about “differentiating” yourself all the time. How do you do it? Try using success stories. They are a great way to show employers that you can assess situations, take action and resolve issues. This method can also demonstrate a wider knowledge rather than being confined to answering a question about one specific thing. The story should show the impact you can have on their profits, expenses, productivity – and the use of dollars, percentages or hard numbers to show what you accomplished in a certain time period will be impressive.
1. Failing to ask for the job. Most people end an interview with a handshake and “I look forward to hearing from you.Getting a face-to-face meeting is an accomplishment. You can’t throw away an opportunity like that by showing your weakness at the very end? If you want the job you have to ask for it. Sum up what your interest is in the company and the position, and that you’d like the opportunity to show them that you are the right person for the job. Follow up with a thank you note to each person with whom you interviewed and reiterate your desire to be the newest member of the team.
Most of these are easily addressed and some take dedicated practice. Either way, overcoming these obstacles greatly increases your chances of success in your job search.
